Can you tell me about a volunteering activity you joined, or a time you helped with a community event, and what your role involved?

81 词

I helped at a community book exchange during the summer holiday. My job was to sort donated books and guide visitors to the right tables. I thought most people would come for novels, but many parents wanted picture books for their children. We moved those books closer to the entrance after the first hour. The change made the event easier to use. I learned that helping is not just following the original plan. It also means noticing what people actually need.

  • My job was to · 用 My job was to 说清自己负责什么
  • after the first hour · 补上做了 1 小时才调整,让事情经过更清楚

101 词

At a book exchange last summer, I sorted donations and directed visitors. We'd arranged everything by broad category, but I noticed parents repeatedly asking where the children's books were. They were at the back, behind a crowded table of novels. After checking with the organiser, I helped move them near the entrance and made a larger sign. It was a small change, yet the questions and congestion dropped noticeably. I had imagined volunteering as simply doing the task assigned to me. That afternoon taught me to pay attention, focus on asking before changing things, and consider the people using the event.

  • After checking with the organiser ·
  • the questions and congestion dropped noticeably · 说提问和拥堵都少了,改动效果有事实支持

Would you rather volunteer regularly with one organisation or join several different one-day events throughout the year?

83 词

I would rather work regularly with one organisation. At a single event, I often spend much of the time learning what to do. If I return to the same place, I can understand the work better and become more useful. I helped at a book exchange twice, and the second time I could train a new volunteer. Different events might be interesting, but a regular role would suit me better. I would choose a schedule that I can manage during busy study weeks.

  • a schedule that I can manage · 说选自己安排得过来的时间,承诺才容易做到

97 词

I'd choose a regular role with one organization, as long as I could commit to it honestly. At my first book exchange, I needed instructions for everything. When I returned, I knew where materials belonged and could show a new volunteer what to do. That felt more useful than constantly starting from zero. Regular contact would also help me understand whether the work was meeting a real need. I enjoy occasional events but prefer one steady commitment underneath them. During exam periods, I'd agree on reduced hours in advance rather than promise attendance I couldn't reliably provide.

Some students argue that volunteering done mainly to improve a job application is less valuable than volunteering for personal reasons. What do you think?

82 词

I understand the concern, but I think the actual work matters more than the first reason for joining. A student may want experience for a job application and still arrive on time and help carefully. I first joined a community event because my friend said it would look good on my record. Later, I enjoyed the work and returned. I would judge volunteers by how they treat people and complete their tasks, not only by what they hoped to gain at first.

  • the actual work matters more · 说更看重实际工作,判断好坏的理由更清楚
  • not only by · 用 not only 说明不能只凭动机下结论

102 词

I wouldn't dismiss the work just because the initial motive is practical. Students have mixed reasons: curiosity, friendship, experience, and generosity can exist together. I first volunteered partly because I wanted something beyond coursework to discuss in interviews. Once I understood the event, I became more interested in whether visitors actually found it useful. What would concern me is someone collecting a certificate while ignoring the people they are meant to help. That's a problem with behaviour, not simply ambition. I'd value reliability, respect, and the quality of the contribution more than a perfect account of why the person signed up originally.

Should universities require every student to complete a certain number of volunteering hours before graduation, or should participation remain a personal choice?

81 词

I think volunteering should remain a choice. If students must finish a fixed number of hours, some may care only about getting a signature. People also have different responsibilities outside class. A friend of mine works every weekend to pay her living costs, so extra required hours would be difficult. The university should offer good opportunities and explain what students can learn. It could recognise regular service, but I would not make it another rule that everyone must complete before graduating.

I'd keep participation voluntary and put more effort into making useful roles accessible. A graduation requirement could increase the number of people signing up without increasing the quality of the help. Organisations might then spend time supervising students who are mainly waiting to get a form signed. I'd prefer the university to offer varied schedules, cover necessary travel costs, and recognize sustained contributions in a meaningful way. That would remove practical barriers while preserving a real choice. Community organizations should help define the roles too, so the program responds to their needs rather than merely serving the university's completion targets.
