Can you tell me about a paid job you have done, or a small task you were paid for, and what you learned from it?

77 词

I worked at a small bakery near my university last winter. My main jobs were packing bread and taking orders. At first, I was nervous when several customers arrived together. The owner showed me how to repeat an order before taking payment. That small habit helped me make fewer mistakes. I only worked on Saturday mornings, but I learned that being friendly is not enough. I also need to listen carefully and keep my work area tidy.

  • At first · 用 At first 先说刚开始的情况

105 词

My first paid job was helping at a bakery near campus on Saturday mornings. I expected the difficult part to be using the till, but it was actually keeping track of several customers at once. One morning, I packed the wrong bread for a customer who was in a hurry. The owner calmly asked me to repeat orders back before touching the bags. That routine stopped me rushing blindly. After a few weeks, I could handle a busy period without feeling overwhelmed. The job taught me that speed often comes from having a reliable process, rather than trying to do everything faster from the beginning.

4 分版直接说“I was nervous”;5.5 分版用预期对比实际:以为难在收银,其实难在“keeping track of”。

If you were choosing a part-time job during term, would you prefer one related to your degree or one with shorter, more flexible shifts?

77 词

I would choose flexible shifts. My degree has group projects, and our meeting times often change. A job related to my subject sounds useful, but I would worry if I could not change my working hours. Last term, my friend worked at the campus shop and could exchange shifts with another student. That arrangement looked suitable for me. I want to earn some money during term, but studying is still the main thing in my university life.

  • would worry if · 用 if 说在哪种情况下自己会担心

101 词

During term, flexibility would matter more to me. A relevant job would look good on my application, but it wouldn't help much if I kept missing coursework deadlines. My roommate works at a campus shop where students can swap shifts through a shared calendar. That would let me earn money without making every busy week a crisis. I'd look for more specialized work during the summer, when I could give it proper attention. So I'm not dismissing experience related to my degree; I'd simply separate the times when I need income from the times when I can focus on career development.

  • wouldn't help much if · 补充兼职可能带来的麻烦,没有只看好处

Some people say every university student should have a part-time job because work teaches responsibility better than classes do. How do you feel about that claim?

81 词

I agree that a job can teach responsibility, but I do not think every student needs one. When I worked at a bakery, I had to arrive on time because another worker was waiting to leave. That was a useful lesson. However, my classmate cares for her younger brother after lectures. She already has serious responsibilities. Students can also learn through group projects or volunteering. A paid job is one good way to learn, but it is not the only way.

  • not the only way · 用 only 说明学会负责还有别的办法

102 词

I'd be careful with the word every. A job certainly made responsibility feel concrete for me: if I arrived late at the bakery, someone else had to stay beyond their shift. One friend helps care for her grandmother and organizes appointments around her lectures. I wouldn't say she needs paid work to become responsible. Classes can also create real obligations when a group depends on your contribution. I'd encourage universities to make suitable jobs available, rather than make employment a test of maturity. The valuable part is learning to follow through on commitments, and students can practice that in several different settings.

4 分版用“not the only way”收尾;5.5 分版用“follow through”点出要学的是兑现承诺。

Do you think universities should give students priority when hiring staff for campus shops and libraries, even if those students have little work experience?

79 词

I think students should get priority for some campus jobs. The location is convenient, and the university can understand their exam timetable better than many other employers. I would like to work in the library because I could go there after class. Still, new workers need training, and some jobs require experienced staff. The school could keep a few permanent workers and let students fill the simpler roles. This would give us useful chances without making the service worse.

  • without making the service worse · 补充服务不能变差,让安排更周全

98 词

I'd support reserving a share of suitable campus jobs for students. For someone like me, a library shift between lectures would be much easier to manage than traveling across town to work. Lack of experience shouldn't automatically rule students out of tasks that can be learned with training. However, I wouldn't replace all experienced staff with temporary student workers. A mixed team would make more sense, with clear duties, paid training, and fewer shifts during exams. That would give students a useful route into employment while keeping the service reliable for everyone who uses it throughout the year.

  • A mixed team would make more sense ·
